Spring is in the Air!

Spring time feels like the best time of year for so many reasons

The sun is warmer, the days are longer, all of the trees and flowers are blooming, and (of course) it’s finally patio season!… it really feels like we all come out of our shells around this time. (Unfortunately  this year has taken a little longer than usual). *eye roll*

Spring is all about doing some much needed spring-cleaning, organizing, and gardening. It’s also a perfect time to give your health a fresh start and do a little detoxifying as well!

During the last 60 to 70 years thousands of new chemicals have been developed, and that number is still increasing every day. All of these chemicals are used in things like our shampoos, toothpastes, make-up, food additives, household cleaners, EMF pollution, environmental pollution… the list goes on.

Detoxifying or cleansing gives our bodies a chance to rid itself of all these extra harmful toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis. You don’t need to commit to a drastic cleanse to help flush these toxins out of your system.

Your Daily Cleansing Routine – Simply Natural

Here are some simple and helpful tips that you can incorporate into your daily routine to improve your health and help transition into the spring and summer seasons feeling your best!

Drink an Abundance of Filtered Water

H20 is everything when it comes to detoxing or cleansing.

Water is necessary for all functions of the body. Your organs, digestive system, excreting toxins, promoting healthy skin and hair, weight-loss, etc.

Without proper hydration, your body works a lot  harder to do any of its normal functions.

Dehydration can lead to a drop in energy levels, muscle cramps, constipation, headaches, acne, excess hunger/weight-gain, and dizziness.

The average person should be consuming at least 6 to 8 glasses of water per day, and even more when activity levels are higher. Try adding ingredients like lemon, cucumber, and mint for extra nutrients and for more of a detoxifying effect.

Dark Leafy Greens and Deep Coloured Vegetables

Parsley, cilantro, spirulina/chlorella (blue-green algae), alfalfa sprouts, kale and spinach are all powerful detoxifying plants and herbs containing chlorophyll that help rid chemicals and heavy metals from our bodies and work to protect the liver.

These foods contain an abundance of B-vitamins which are necessary for cell growth, regulating fat metabolism, combating fatigue and depression, and for  improving immunity and healing.

You can juice them, make smoothies with them, or add them to salads. Green leafy vegetables should be consumed on a daily basis. Head to the Farmers market for some local and organic greens!

Good Fats + Healthy Gut = Natural Beauty

Work on beauty from the inside-out. Lay off of the chemical-rich beauty products and moisturizers, and say hello to Omega 3’s, Probiotics, and Vitamin C to provide you with glowing skin, healthy hair and strong nails.

Omega 3’s are a great way to help protect the liver, improve skin’s elasticity and hair health, and promotes good brain health. Flaxseed oil, hempseed oil, and fresh water fish are some of the best food sources you should be incorporating into your diet daily.

Probiotics are essential for gut health. Your gut is basically your second brain, so if there is an imbalance in the gut, there will likely be an imbalance elsewhere in the body (ex: skin inflammation).

Probiotics help keep the bad bacteria at bay, which in turn promotes good digestion (and feeling less bloated and inflamed), resulting in more balanced body systems.

Fermented foods and drinks like sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha and kefir are all loaded with probiotics and will keep your gut happy!

Do you have your ABC’s covered?

Vitamin C, as we all know, is essential for your immune system, but did you know it also is important antioxidant for your liver’s health as it helps neutralize free-radical cells?

When there is not enough vitamin C in the body, the liver function becomes compromised. Hence, you won’t be able to detoxify optimally.

Vitamin C also plays a large role in collagen formation which helps preserve the integrity of muscles, blood vessels and body tissues.

Citrus fruits, broccoli, red peppers, kale and strawberries all have high levels of vitamin C that you can get through your diet!

Apple Cider Vinegar

This stuff is probably one of the most natural multi-use products out there! It’s not only good for eliminating your symptoms of bloating/gas/heartburn, but it’s also amazing for your skin, hair and even weight-loss.

Try adding 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar into a glass of warm water with lemon every morning to reap the benefits.

Raw Vegetables

The more we move into the warmer months, the less we crave the hot and heavy foods, and tend to reach for more cooling foods such as salads and raw vegetables.

Raw veggies are amazing for detoxifying as they help purge your liver of toxins and harmful chemicals because of the naturally occurring sulfur and glutathione (antioxidant) they contain.

Some foods containing these are raw carrots, onions, garlic, asparagus, cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens, cabbage, and brussels sprouts), kale, turmeric, and oregano.

By the way, did you know that cruciferous veggies such as collard greens are full of an especially beneficial nutrient called indole-3-carbinol (I3C) that is amazing for supporting breast health?

Dr. Andrea Chambers says she’s a big fan of including this nutrient in your daily diet, and recommends it to patients often.

Ditch the Sugar

Sugar is one of the, if not the most, toxic and addictive “foods” (if you want to classify it as a food) out there.

By now I’m sure you’ve learned a little about how bad it really is for our bodies, so it would be a no-brainer as to why you’d want to cut this bad-boy out if you haven’t already.

Not only does it leach important vitamins and minerals we want to hold onto from our bones, it increases bad cravings, causes weight gain, headaches, lowers the immune system, leaves you feeling irritable, and is one of the leading causes to countless diseases.

Excess sugar toxicity is definitely going to stop you from feeling your best, so do yourself a favor and kick that white stuff out the door before it’s too late!

Incorporate healthier options for sweetness like berries and other fruits, local honey, 100% real maple syrup, stevia, dark chocolate, and coconut sugar if you have a bit of a sweet tooth!

Dry Skin Brushing

The largest organ of elimination in your body is your skin. Up to a third of all body impurities are excreted through the skin, which means hundreds of thousands of tiny pores and sweat glands are excreting toxins and waste products.

Dry brushing is a great way to stimulate all of the organs of detoxification and elimination because of its gentle internal massage. It effectively removes dead layers of skin and other impurities while also keeping pores open and functioning optimally.

Dry brushing also helps to cleanse the lymphatic system and is especially good for when you are feeling under the weather when used in combination of hot-cold showers.

It stimulates the hormone and oil producing glands, keeping your skin looking and feeling young, smooth, and strong!

Stay tuned for more information in our next post on how to perform it and which type of brush you’ll want to use.

Nettle Leaf Tea is known to gently cleanse the body of toxins because of the wide range of beneficial nutrients found in it.

Nettle leaf helps to stimulate the lymphatic and circulatory systems and improves the gut and digestive process, therefore preventing over-accumulation of dangerous toxins. It is also known as a “drying” anti-inflammatory detoxifying herb, so it is perfect to use in a springtime cleanse!

Laprinol by St. Francis Herbs is one of the best lymphatic stimulating supplements for detoxifying. It plays a powerful role as an alterative agent that is keyed specifically to the lymph nodes.

By the way, “alterative” means that it performs a cleansing function and helps the body eliminate harmful metabolic waste.

You can find Laprinol tinctures at our clinic as well as many health food store aisles.

Milk Thistle is a powerful liver detoxifying herb. It contains silymarin and silybin which are both antioxidants known to protect the liver from harmful toxins, including the effects of alcohol – nice little hangover tip for you!

Milk thistle has also been shown to decrease damage to the liver that’s been caused by prescription medications, antibiotics, pollution, and heavy metals.

So there you have it, 9 easy, yet effective ways that you can gently detoxify the body on a daily basis!
